Some deliciously hot news has hit the indie scene over the past several days. In this edition of the Indie Roundup, we've got new releases worth checking out, upcoming titles to look forward to, remakes of previous games, and even potential handheld ports. If you're a fan of indie games, there's definitely a lot to look forward to, and there's already plenty worth checking out as we speak. So rather than delaying this any further, let's talk indie games!
Anna – Extended Edition adds new content to a first-person horror adventure
When Anna launched for the PC, it wasn't exactly without its flaws. While it certainly managed to scare the crap out of many who dared enter its ominous world, the indie survival horror game was marred with some pretty nasty issues. Developer Dreampainters is looking to remedy that with Anna – Extended Edition. This enhanced version of the scary title features new puzzles and environments. Additionally, an improved interface has been thrown in to address many players' previous complaints. That's not all, though, because Dreampainters also added new music and made some graphical improvements to the overall package. Lastly, a brand new character, the Wife Doll, has been introduced. (Your guess is as good as mine as to what that may be, but it sounds really eerie.)
You can purchase Anna – Extended Edition on Steam for $14.99.
Indie RPG Dragon Fantasy out now on PSN
Developer Muteki Corporation has released its retro-inspired RPG Dragon Fantasy on the PlayStation Network. The game is a throwback to classic NES franchises such as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest (Duh, right?) and delivers old school gameplay and visuals. This version of Dragon Fantasy sports brand new 16-bit visuals, though you're free to switch back to the 8-bit style if you so desire. It should also be pointed out that the RPG is both cross-buy and cross-save, so feel free to let out a celebratory “Aww, yeah!”
La-Mulana is finally available on Steam
It was about time, wasn't it? Developer Nigoro's famed indie treasure La-Mulana has landed on Steam, and you can currently purchase it for $14.99. The 2D action-adventure game was released on Playism and WiiWare, and it ultimately entered Steam Greenlight, where it has succeeded in becoming yet another indie game to make it past the approval process. If you were waiting on the Steam version of this challenging old school-influenced journey, go forth, download the game, and enjoy yourself.
Head on over to Steam and prepare for adventure in La-Mulana.
Q.U.B.E. confirmed for Wii U, Vita version may happen
Indie puzzler Q.U.B.E. will soon make its way to the Wii U, announced Toxic Games. Judging from a screenshot posted on the game's official Twitter page, it would appear that the game will be playable entirely on the GamePad. Details are scarce at the moment, but there's definitely a lot of potential for smaller devs to get really creative with their projects on Nintendo's latest platform, and Q.U.B.E. has a ton of promise. Toxic also expressed interest in releasing the game for the Vita, which would certainly make sense.
Shelter from Pid dev will have you playing as a protective mother badger
The cool thing about indie games is that, more often than not, they're willing to explore ideas and stories that most mainstream releases wouldn't dare touch upon. Such is the case with Shelter, an upcoming game from Pid developer Might and Delight that stars a badger momma whose sole purpose is to protect her little ones from the elements. An emotional backdrop will drive the experience, focusing on “creating attachment between the player and the badger family.” Shelter is set to launch sometime this summer.
You can currently vote for Might and Delight's latest project on Steam Greenlight.
You can now pre-order 2D open world game Starbound
Developer Chucklefish recently announced that its upcoming sandbox project Starbound was officially available for pre-order. While the game has been touted as a Terraria-inspired experience, it would appear that this is no clone. Starbound allows you to travel across several procedurally generated planets, giving you the opportunity to explore, adventure, loot, and craft to your heart's content. Additionally, quests and missions will progress the story and give you a little something extra to do as you make your way across countless planets in this interstellar romp.
If you're looking for some sandbox gaming that takes you across galaxies, you may want to pre-order Starbound.
