Is Xbox Fusion the name of the next Xbox?

If domain registrations are any indication of a company's plans, Xbox Fusion could be the name of Microsoft's next generation Xbox. Rumors about the name of Microsoft's next console is nothing new, but new information regarding the Xbox Fusion domain name have led to increased speculation that it could serve as the official name for the next Xbox.

As Fusible points out, there are several indications that Xbox Fusion could serve as the official name. For starters, Microsoft owns more than just the domain's dot-com; it also owns a slew of other domains like XboxFusion.infoXboxFusion.biz,XboxFusion.deXboxFusion.co.uk, and more.

However, domain names may not only serve as indications as to what a product could be named, but also what it won't. In the case of the next Xbox, we can probably rule out the Xbox 720, Xbox Infinity, Xbox 8, and Xbox Durango. Although these are the most popular of the rumored names, Microsoft's lack of domain name commitment to them suggest these won't be the official names.

Fusible also compiled a list of Microsoft's matching domain names. Surprisingly (or maybe not so), XboxFusion.com is the only one that Microsoft actually owns. It also redirects visitors to Xbox.com. Microsoft also owns the Xbox Gold domain which Microsoft acquired back in February; however, it's believed that this is related to Microsoft's Xbox LIVE Gold subscription service.

  • XboxInfinity.com (WHOIS) – Microsoft does not own the domain.
  • Xbox8.com (WHOIS) -Microsoft does not own the domain.
  • XboxDurango.com (WHOIS) – Microsoft does not own the domain.
  • XboxInfinite.com (WHOIS) – Microsoft does not own the domain.
  • XboxFusion.com (WHOIS) – Microsoft owns the domain.
  • XboxNext.com (WHOIS) – Microsoft owns the domain.
  • XboxGold.com (WHOIS) – Microsoft owns the domain.

So will Xbox Fusion be the name of the next Xbox? Domain investor Andy Booth believes so, based solely on the number of Xbox Fusion domain names that have been registered and that the "infinity" symbol can also be interpreted as "fusion." It seems we'll find out this month as Microsoft is hosting an event  on May 21 to unveil the next generation of Xbox gaming.
