Avalanche Studios’ steampunk sandbox game put on hold until it finds its monocle and bowler hat

Steampunk everything! Because everything is better with steampunk! That's why it's disappointing to wake up this morning and find out that Just Cause 2 developer Avalanche Studios has put their mysterious sanbox, steampunk-style game on hold. The developer's CEO Christofer Sundberg tweeted a couple of blurry images back in February, and it was thought to be shots from Just Cause 3; it was either that or possibly the Mad Max game that the studio has been said to be working on.

In an interview with Edge, Sundberg said that the images "were from a steampunk-style game we had in development that we put on ice. I really love that art style, and to combine it with sandbox gameplay is a dream of mine. Fortunately, being an independent developer I can control my own destiny and we'll make something in that world sooner or later."

Unfortunately, though they are working on it, it looks like the "later" will be more accurate. Sundberg also said in the interview that Avalanche is "developing for both current and next-gen," but until the games are announced, they won't be going into any detail. With the next Xbox getting announced on May 21, and the PS4 inevitably getting more press at E3 next month, maybe we'll get some announcements soon.
