Blizzard's "special announcement" at Gamescom later this month could have something to do with "The Dark Below," if a newly filed trademark application is any indication.
Blizzard filed the trademark for "The Dark Below" on August 9, and while the filing doesn't provide us with manyd etails, the listing on Scribd indicates it is a game, one that includes "virtual currency and items for use in virtual environments created for entertainment purposes."
Blizzard last month sent out invitations to a special press event in which the company would be "making a special announcement that's sure to capture the attention of the Heavens, Burning Hells and all the shadowed places that lie between."
The company currently has a number of other projects also in the pipeline including Blizzard All-Stars, Diablo 3 for consoles, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void, and a next-generation MMO. It's worth noting, however, that Dark Below is the name of something in the Warcraft universe which means it could have something to do with World of Warcraft, Blizzard's long-standing MMORPG. With subscription numbers on the decline the special announcement could be some sort of free-to-play model.
