NPD sales numbers released for July

The NPD group has released their official commercial game and console sales list for the month July – one that confirmed the notably slow summer drought that we’re currently in as eyes look towards the fall and next-gen.

NCAA Football 14, despite reporting less than stellar sales numbers in comparison to past years, topped the list of best-selling games for July. Total game sales themselves, which includes hardware, software and accessories, clocked in at $443 million, down 19% from last year, while software sales also reported disappointing numbers – down 20% from this time last year.

Below are the top selling games for the period of July 7- August 3:

  1. NCAA Football 14 (360, PS3)
  2. Minecraft (360)
  3. The Last of Us (PS3)**
  4. Call of Duty: Black Ops II (360, PS3, NWU, PC)**
  5. Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS)
  6. Far Cry 3 (360, PS3, PC)
  7. Battlefield 3 (360, PS3, PC)**
  8. Injustice: Gods Among Us (360, PS3, NWU)**
  9. NBA 2K13 (360, PS3, Wii, NWU, PSP, PC)**
  10. Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (360, Wii, NDS, PS3, 3DS, NWU, PSV, PC)

**(includes CE, GOTY editions, bundles, etc. but not those bundled with hardware)

On the hardware side on things, Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE’s Major Nelson, confirmed that, once again, Xbox 360 led console sales for July, tweeting, “July NPD's are in: Xbox 360 sold 107,000 units in the US last month.”

However, Nintendo’s 3DS continued its recent success, topping all hardware sales, as NPD’s Liam Callahan noted, “for the third consecutive month, hardware sales were led by the Nintendo 3DS. For consoles, the Xbox 360 had the highest hardware sales with July 2013, making it the leading console for thirty-one months in a row. The 3DS was the only hardware platform to show growth over last July.”

While this month’s data may disappoint some, Callahan insisted that this July has shown a lot of promise for the industry saying, “…we are seeing an increase of dollars and units generated per SKU from games launches this July compared to last.” And if that’s not enough, Callahan added, “This July represents the best July for point and subscription cards on record.”
