Ubisoft’s The Crew seen as ‘an RPG’

Ubisoft's The Crew is technically an open-world driving game, but it's a RPG at heart. Speaking on the company blog, creative director Julian Gerighty talked about the many customization choices available to players — 40 vehicles and 19 distinct elements to customize in each of them.

“We see this as an RPG,” Gerighty said. “It’s an RPG where if you start with a car and you love that car, you’ll be able to invest time and money into it and unlock all of its possibilities.”

The Ubisoft blog points out you'll be able to choose from a variety of options ranging from parts to tunings to perks for your driving style.

“With the Camaro [SS 2010], we can take it from a street vehicle to a performance vehicle – a heavily modified vehicle – to a pure off-road vehicle, and at the end of the game you’re going to be able to make it a racecar,” Gerighty explained.

One of the ways Ubisoft will help emphasize The Crew's customization is through the companion app which will let you fiddle with your car regardless of where you are.

“There’s a lot of preparation for your evening game session,” Gerighty added. “You can set your waypoints and prepare your car.” And whether that means fiddling with a variety of cars from a well-stocked fleet or tinkering with that one special ride, it’s all up to you."

The Crew isn't due out until 2014, but we're very excited to see more of this game in the future. How about you?
