Warhammer Online is free-to-play until final shutdown

Developer Mythic Entertainment is giving Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning players one last "parting gift" before the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) shuts down for good on Dec. 18.

"Effective immediately, we will be turning off the ability to apply [for] one-month subscriptions and game time codes to Warhammer Online accounts and removing the ability to open new Warhammer Online accounts," Mythic wrote in an update this weekend.

Anyone who has or had an account in good standing as of Oct. 31 can play for free until the game goes offline.

"We will be adding new NPCs to the game in order to power up your characters as well as other unique experiences for everyone to enjoy as we say goodbye to Warhammer Online over the next few weeks," wrote Mythic.

Mythic announced the game's closure in September as the developer's contract with intellectual-property owner Games Workshop is ending. Warhammer Online has been active for five years.
