Highly anticipated kart racer, Mario Kart 8, will be released for the Wii U some time in May of this year. It couldn't come at a better time as the Wii U is in desperate need of a turnaround.
Earlier this month, Nintendo slashed its financial forecasts for the current fiscal year while drastically lowering its Wii U sales estimates. Originally estimating 9 million Wii U consoles sold worldwide by March 31, 2014, Nintendo's new target is just 2.8 million units. In the company's latest financial earnings report, it was revealed that just 2.41 million Wii U consoles have been sold since April 2013.
Mario Kart 8 is the first entry in the franchise to be released for the Wii U. As such, many view it as the Wii U's only hope for a turnaround. Based on my hands-on time with the game at E3, it certainly has all of the qualities to make it a must-buy on the Wii U, but is necessarily a system-seller? I hope so, for Nintendo's sake.
