Destiny Guide: Understanding class skill trees

As more and more of you seek to fulfill your Destiny, I look to clarify some of the confusion about certain aspects of this game. Something that all players will have to deal with, regardless of which of the three classes you pick at the start, is your class skill tree. At first glance, this bad boy may be overwhelming and as you continue to play there is a good chance you’ll get the wrong idea about it. With that said, let’s clarify it.

In this explanation, I’ll be solely referencing this screenshot of the early game Titan skill tree below:

Class Skill Tree

Let’s start with the red box. These are your primary skills. From left to right these are your movement skill, special ability, and melee skill. Everyone will get and gain these abilities with no choice of options. Each of the three classes have unique abilities; subclasses share the same movement skill but different special abilities and melee skills.

Now the blue vertical rectangles are where choice lives. Let’s say you’ve unlocked every ability for simplicity reasons. You can only use one of the three abilities in each box at a time. The ones under your primary abilities are there because they relate directly to those primary skills. For instance, the abilities under melee are all melee related. The others, not under primary abilities, are just unrelated sets.

Once an ability is unlocked, you have it forever and can switch back to it whenever. Nothing is ever set in stone. There is no specific place you need to go to switch abilities nor is there a cost attached to it. Hell, there is even an achievement / trophy for doing so – so have at it. So as you unlock these abilities through gaining experience, you’re going to want to use the first ones you get because that’s better than nothing.

Keep in mind that once you reach level 15 and can switch your subclass, when you do switch you are going to have to grind out the new abilities like you’re a level 1 character again. When you switch back to your original subclass, you still have all the abilities you unlocked before. You'll never lose anything you’ve unlocked.

Best of luck unlocking all of your classes and subclasses abilities, grind that experience! Mix and match your abilities to see what works best for you. Most likely you'll have a differnt PvE and PvP set. I hope the whole system is more clear to you now.
