MTX is a new dirt bike motocross racing game for the PC. Jump on your bike
and ride many challenging tracks on your way to becoming one of the best the
sport has to offer. You can choose freestyle, exhibition races motocross and
supercross challenges, heck you can even design your own track.
Once you get started you will be able to choose your rider’s appearance and
what sort of outfit he/she will be wearing. Like most games of this genre, you
will either have to beat the AI racers at early levels to unlock different
courses or earn some money from wins, or land a sponsorship to unlock new bikes
or customized apparel. You can customize your jersey with a name and number to
help you recognize your rider in the races.
MTX plays well on the PC even if you don’t have a game pad. Using keyboard
controls works nicely, but in my opinion is a tad better using a game pad. Most
of the physics involved with turning, jumping, accelerating, etc seemed pretty
good. Yes one might have a gripe or two that they maybe a little forgiving, but
that’s what makes the game playable even for new gamers to the genre…like
myself. Just about every facet to dirt bike racing can be found in MTX Mototrax.
There are plenty of different venues to race at and a whole truckload full of
gear. You will be pleased to know that not only can you find enjoyment in the
single player modes but, there is plenty to be found in the multiplayer games.
Visually and audibly the game does well to immerse you in the game. The
tracks at all the different venues do well to make you feel like you are really
there. You even see real banners from top sponsors of the sport littered through
out each course, just like the real deal. And with 125 and 250 cc engines
whizzing past makes everything realistic. Too bad you just can’t smell the
exhaust. That would be the icing on the cake.
With MTX you also have the option to add your own creativity and design your
own track. Giving you an endless library of tracks to play with your friends. I
imagine it won’t be to long until the games online will be mostly user created
games. This will give this title longevity and not destined to collect dust on a
shelf.
It’s nice to see this genre make its way to the PC. It is done well and loads
of fun to play. The single player games and career mode give you a sense of
having to do well to unlock new gear and tracks. Once you have mastered these,
take your riding skills and go online or play via LAN against your buddies.
Review Scoring Details for MTX Mototrax |
Gameplay: 8
Easy to start and even playing on a keyboard can be quite fun. Of course a
game pad is a bit easier.
Graphics: 7.5
Visually the game is quite good. Would have liked to have seen environmental
effects like wind and rain, or even a night race. The bikes, tracks, and riders
were well done.
Sound: 8
The sound effects were quite realistic and a pretty good sound track. My
only gripe is during some of the commentating there were some skips in the
voiceovers. Overall the sound is pretty good.
Difficulty: Medium
You can toggle the difficulty settings, but you still need to master your
riding skills if you are going to unlock all the goodies like new gear, tracks,
bikes, etc. Starting out is easy but you will have to learn how to ride to do
well even on the easiest settings
Concept: 7
I really liked the choices of freestyle, motocross, supercross and free
ride. Its pretty much typical dirt bike racing game, nothing exactly new here.
What’s nice is that we don’t see to many for the PC.
Multiplayer: 9
Internet games have to be played on Game Spy unless you know the IP address.
MP also supports LAN play. There are a variety of races including a king of the
hill race where you have to run into other riders. WAY COOL! I personally
would have liked to see a dedicated server from the makers, but Game Spy works
just fine.
Overall: 8.0
Is a fun game to play especially for the money.
