A fun evening filled will fans looking to enjoy the thrilling conclusion of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, quickly turned into a horror scene as an armed gunman opened fire on a crowd at the midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises in Colorado.
According to multiple reports, the suspect, now being identified as 24-year-old James Holmes, was carrying multiple weapons (an assault-type rifle and two handguns) and wearing a bulletproof vest and gas mask when he appeared at the front of the theater during the film. He is said to have released a canister of tear gas (or a smoke bomb) before opening fire. Reports indicate that twelve people were killed and at least 50 were injured, including a three-month-old and a six-year-old girl, as a result of the incident.
"It was mass chaos," witness Jennifer Seeger told TODAY. After shooting the ceiling, "he threw in the gas can, and then I knew it was real."
"Everyone's going for the door and then everyone starts saying, 'no, he's going to shoot people going for the door,' and he did," she recalled. "They're trying to escape, and he shot those people as well."
Another witness recalled "anywhere from 10 to 20 shots and little explosions going on. Shortly after that we heard people screaming. Then they came on PA system and said everyone needed to get out."
Holmes was apprehended in the shopping center's parking lot. The incident took place in the Century 16 Movie Theaters at the Aurora Town Center, less than 10 miles east of downtown Denver. Police say he did not resist, nor put up a fight, and that Holmes acted alone.
Following the arrest, police than evacuated and investigated Holmes' apartment building after he made claims about possible explosives being there.
President Obama, who is currently here in Florida, issued a statement: “Michelle and I are shocked and saddened by the horrific and tragic shooting in Colorado. Federal and local law enforcement are still responding, and my administration will do everything that we can to support the people of Aurora in this extraordinarily difficult time."
"We are committed to bringing whoever was responsible to justice, ensuring the safety of our people, and caring for those who have been wounded. As we do when confronted by moments of darkness and challenge, we must now come together as one American family."
Our hearts go out to the victims and families who suffered at the hands of this crazed lunatic. From everyone at GameZone, we offer our condolences to all of those involved in this tragic incident.
