Sony has shipped 13.5 million PS4 consoles worldwide in the system's first year of availability. Celebrating tomorrow's one-year anniversary of the PS4's release, Sony shared an infographic highlighting various milestones and feats.
Since its launch last November, gamers have spent about one billion hours playing games online. The share button — which allows users to upload photos or videos of gameplay — has been pressed 530 million times.
In the United States alone, PS4 hardware sales have generated the most revenue during its first year than any other new gaming platform.
"It’s hard to believe that 12 short months ago, the PlayStation Nation finally got their hands on the most powerful and socially connected gaming platform ever created," SCEA President and CEO Shawn Layden said. "With blockbuster games from our Worldwide Studios like inFAMOUS Second Son, MLB 14 The Show, Killzone Shadow Fall, The Last of Us Remastered and new innovative features like Share Play and SHAREfactory, PS4 has had an unprecedented first year!"
These are just a few of the notable achievements for the PlayStation 4. Sony promises more detailed information in the coming days. Also, on December 6th-7th, Sony will be hosting the PlayStation Experience in Las Vegas where they promise attendees "access to the best PlayStation games coming in 2015, first hands-on with new content, developer interviews and panels lead by the industry’s most regarded development teams, and much more."
"Thanks again for your incredible support over the years and please know that you, the PlayStation Nation, are in our hearts and minds every day reminding us to continue delivering the best gaming experiences possible and always ensure that PlayStation is truly the best place to play," Layden concluded.
For fanboys keeping track of the whole "console war," Microsoft earlier this week said the Xbox One is approaching 10 million Xbox One consoles shipped worldwide since its launch (also last November). While the PS4 may be ahead now, it looks like the Xbox One is closing the gap — at least in the United States. Microsoft also noted that Xbox One sales have "skyrocketed" since the new price cut took effect, and the Xbox One could outsell the PS4 in the U.S. for the month of November. Should sales remain on pace, it would be the first time the Xbox One outsold the PS4 in the United States for a month since both consoles released last year.
