17.4 million iOS and Android devices were activated on Christmas

Those of you worried that artificial intelligence may one day rule over humanity may not want to read this — especially when you consider that the U.S. population is already outnumbered by internet-connected devices. A recent report from independent analyst Flurry, claims that 17.4 million new iOS and Android devices were activated on Christmas day. Furthermore, a staggering 328 million apps were downloaded on the same day.

That's not all, however. The analyst posted another statistic yesterday claiming that over 50 million iOS and Android devices were activated throughout the rest of the week (through December 31, 2012), and a total of 1.76 billion apps were downloaded. Of that number, the U.S. was responsible for the majority, with 604 million downloads.

Flurry did not categorize what types of apps users downloaded, but did estimate that the trend of one-billion-download weeks would soon become the norm. Flurry expects the industry will surpass the two-billion download week during Q4 2013.

"Following a year where Google and Apple drove unprecedented adoption of mobile devices, Facebook declared itself a “mobile” company, and Amazon and Microsoft both made significant investments into mobile computing, we look forward to continued record-breaking adoption of smart devices and applications," the company said.
