Back in November, the release of Sony's extremely limited edition 20th Anniversary PlayStation 4 — which sold out just minutes after becoming available for purchase — was commanding some pretty ridiculous prices through secondhand resale websites like eBay. The console, which sold for $499 through Sony's website, was being purchased for as high as $15,000.
But how much would you pay for the very first model? Out of the 12,300 20th Anniversary PS4s created, the very first issue — serial number 00001 — was thrown into a bidding war on Yahoo Auctions in Japan.
Sony's first edition of the 20th Ann. PS4 ran at around ¥49,980 ($420) in Japan and sold for ¥15,135,000 ($129,000). The money won by Sony in the Auction won't be staying with the company though. It will be donated to a charity called Save the Children Japan with a matching amount from the Sony. In regards to the auction, Sony came out with an official statement thanking those that participated in the auction: "We appreciate all who participated in the auction and are surprised at the highest bid price, which was higher than our expectations."
