2K claims Mafia 3 is the company’s fastest selling game of all time

Mafia 3 may have succeeded despite negative reviews.

Last week, we reported a rumor that claimed Mafia 3 hadn't sold a million copies yet and needs to sell 8 million to be a success. Turns out, that first part was probably wrong and we probably look like a bunch of goofs now. But hey, we will own up to it and admit that rumors can be wrong!

2K is reporting that the their newest entry in the Mafia franchise, Mafia 3, is selling wildly fast and is performing very well for them financially. Although the game has gotten less than stellar reviews thanks to its glitches and lack of content, the game has quickly made its way to the fastest selling game over at 2K. 2K claims the game shipped over 4.5 million copies in the first week alone. Keep in mind that is SHIPPED, not sold to consumers. It's currently unclear how many copies are actually in the hands of players but we may find out during Take-Two's financial call later today.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick spoke about the controversial game and how they were careful not to go overboard with the racism in the game and made sure to keep it historically accurate. “It’s tough to take on a subject material like this and treat it realistically and sensitively,” Zelnick said. “We have to be sure not to put our words in the character's mouths, but to make sure the words belong in the mouths of the characters.”

We reviewed Mafia 3 and praised the story and world building but gave it a fairly negative review due to the overwhelming number of glitches and lack of content.

Mafia 3 is out now on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
