After recent teases, 2K Games today unveiled the Mafia Trilogy for current-gen consoles and PC. In a big surprise, the collection also includes a full remake of the first Mafia game. The publisher will reveal much more about the trilogy collection on May 19. In the meantime, check out the teaser trailer here!
One of the most seasoned open-world crime franchises is getting a large collection that includes every game of it so far. To be fair, despite its close-to 20-year life, there are only three Mafia games yet. But today’s news of the Mafia Trilogy could change this somewhat.
You see, the original Mafia game released all the way back in 2002. Just around the time when true open-world games were becoming a thing in gaming thank to the iconic GTAIII. But unlike Rockstar, Illusions Softworks – now known as 2K Czech – were aiming for a much more mature and grounded crime epic that leans much closer to the Godfather movies.
Time is a cruel mistress however and that goes especially in the gaming landscape when products seemingly age at an even faster rate. As such, it’s a hard task for many gamers to play and enjoy the first Mafia with its many antiquated mechanics and design decisions. Let alone the early-2000s visuals.
So, when 2K Games teased something Mafia-related earlier this week, we weren’t really getting our hopes up that the original would get much more attention than maybe enhanced textures. But lo and behold, today’s Mafia Trilogy comes together with a Mafia remake. You can see several impressive screenshots of the remake on the Microsoft Store linked here. Exceptional news which should elevate the trilogy from being just a collection of old games into a full-fledged new big game release to look forward to.
