According to 343 Industries, Halo 5: Guardians' story is so layered that players "won't want to rush through it." Narrative designer Morgan Lockhart revealed that 343 approached the story one layer at a time during their panel at San Diego Comic-Con.
"We definitely approached this story as a story of layers," said Lockhart. "So there's the high level that you're always going to see that's going to be the driving story that you need to understand to appreciate the game. But then there's a lot of narrative that you won't find if you rush through it. But if you take it slow and look and explore, you're going to find all these rich character and world details."
Halo 5 isn't hurting for characters, instead of solely focusing on the trials and tribulations of Master Chief, there will be two teams: Blue Team and Fireteam Osiris. The Blue Team will be headed by Master Chief and three other Spartans – Linda, Kelly, and Fred. Fireteam Osiris will be headed by Spartan Locke and his three teammates.
Each character on the team will offer something to game, bringing a new level to Halo 5's story. "By having these unique voices, we're able to offer different perspectives and opinions, and our characters are able to argue, or find places to agree about these really big questions," Lockhart said.
