We have gotten used to a couple things in Halo, whether its the way the campaign environments are set up, how you play as Master Chief and more. In order to keep the series interesting, some things have to be changed every once and awhile.
If it were up to Halo's franchise director Frank O'Connor, the future of the Halo universe would be a more 'realistic story.' O'Connor would even like to look into a game in the Halo-verse that would take a step away from the genre that the franchise is known for.
“You asked me what I’d be excited about in the future, and certainly in terms of interactivity, I think games or methods of gameplay that aren’t simply shooting interest me,” said O’Connor to TIME. “I’d love to go do a xenoarcheological expedition to the original Halo ring. You know, take some scientists down, drive around, catch samples, do some detective work, maybe there’s a mystery. And it wouldn’t require shooting. It’s the universe and environment that can still be exciting, even without action. So that’s one of the things I’d love to see us invest more in.”
Historically, Halo has been a first-person shooter through and through, on-top of being an FPS game it's also an RPG. It would take a lot from the fanbase to be interested in a game that calls itself part of the series, but doesn't have a huge feature of the game.
And if you're wondering, yes, 343 Indsutries is working on the next Halo game.
