4.5 million Nintendo 3DS units sold in first year

The Nintendo 3DS has sold nearly twice as many units in the United States in its first year than the DS did in the same period.

Nintendo celebrated the 3DS' first birthday, announcing the handheld sold 4.5 million units.  In comparison, the DS sold 2.3 million units in the United States in its first 12 months.

In addition, the 3DS has already sold over 9 million games and 100+ titles in its library.  In comparison, the DS, in the same stage of its lifecycle sold 5 million software units and had 58 games in its library.

“Nintendo 3DS closes its first year with a lengthy list of accomplishments but we’re still just scratching the surface,” Nintendo’s American president Reggie Fils-Aime said.

It's a surface that many thought the 3DS would never break.  Slow sales early on led many to speculate the 3DS would be a flop.  But after a price cut late last year, the 3DS went on a surge, and it hasn't looked back since.

Fils-Aime added: “With a massive lineup of first- and third-party games and more on the way, a budding library of entertainment options and an engaged and growing installed base, Nintendo 3DS has an incredibly bright future.  We’re just getting started but this platform is built for the long haul.”
