Microsoft's jump to Windows 8 is proving to be very successful. To date, the new operating system — which has been available for about a month now — has sold 40 million licenses. According to Microsoft's latest blog post, Windows 8 is "outpacing Windows 7 in terms of upgrades."
So either people were really disappointed with Windows 7 (and everything prior) or Windows 8 must be REALLY attractive. Microsoft introduced a new shell and user interface with Windows 8 — one based on Microsoft's "Metro" design language. It features a new Start screen with a grid of dynamically updated tiles, each representing different applications. Other features include an emphasis on touchscreen input, the new Windows Store to obtain and purchase applications for the system, and the ability to synchronize programs and settings between multiple devices.
Additionally, the launch of Windows 8 also saw the opening of the Windows Store. Microsoft also revealed that the number of apps in the store (which already launched with more than any other app store at their launch) has since doubled. Some apps have already crossed the $25,000 revenue mark.
