50 Steam Greenlight titles on sale

Valve is celebrating one year of Steam Greenlight by knocking down the prices on 50 Greenlight games, with sales up to 75 percent. The discounts will last until September 1.

Steam Greenlight is the company's way of screening for potential releases on Steam. It introduced the method on August 30 last year. The community votes on games (and software) they like, and Valve approves the best for launch on the service.

The company says the total number of independent titles on Steam has doubled to over 580 because of the process. Developers submit an average of four new titles for consideration every day.

"Ultimately, our goal is to have no bottlenecks at all between developers and consumers," said Gabe Newell, the co-founder and managing director of Valve. "As we move closer to that, launching Greenlight and evolving our backend toolset has helped us increase our publishing throughput, pushing the number of independent titles released in the last 12 months to equal the number of titles published from all other categories combined. We expect that number to grow dramatically as we continue to iterate upon our developer service features and seek more ways to improve Steam's value to the community."

Yesterday, Valve approved its largest batch yet, announcing 100 new Greenlight titles. That's brought the total count to 260 releases, about half of which are from indie developers.
