$83 million pledged to Kickstarter games in 2012

It's no secret that 2012 was the year of Kickstarter games. It seemed like every day we were getting press releases and announcements that a new company or developer or entrepreneur — who couldn't necessarily get the backing from traditional investors — had launched a Kickstarter in hopes that the masses would help fund their goal. Judging from the success games saw on Kickstarter in 2012, it's likely 2013 will be much more of the same.

According to the latest Kickstarter report, which revealed several key figures and milestones achieved, the crowd funding site saw more than 2.2 million people donate nearly $320 million total to different projects — successfully funding just over 18,000. Of that number, games had the most money pledged at $83 million.

Not all of the game Kickstarters were successful though. There were 2,796 game-related Kickstarters for the year with 911 of them successfully getting funded. Still not a bad success to failure ratio. So if you are looking for funding for your latest game-related endeavor, you may want to check out the popular crowd funding site.

With that being said, I fully expect 2013 to be another banner year in terms of crowd funding. Are we seeing the end of the traditional investor/publisher model?
