Microsoft has rewarded a 9-year-old boy who decided to give up his very own Christmas present to gift blankets to a local shelter.
Three years ago Mikah Frye, a 9-year-old boy in Ohio, and his family found themselves in an emergency shelter after being rendered homeless. Every night, the family was given blankets to keep warm but had to give those blankets back the next day.
Now, Mikah and his family are in a much different place, but Mikah hasn’t forgotten the struggles that he and his family faced.
Earlier this month, the 9-year-old boy told his family not to buy him a $300 Xbox One, but instead, to buy 30 blankets to donate to the homeless.
“He knew what it was like to not have a blanket at night and have to give it back,” said 9-year-old Mikah’s grandmother Terry Brant. “So the first thing he wanted to do is give a blanket that they could keep.”
Microsoft caught wind of Mikah’s selflessness and decided that he deserved his own Christmas surprise – the very gift he turned down in order to help others. Microsoft coordinated with the family to surprise Mikah while they were walking through their local mall and passing by a Microsoft store.
When Mikah came across the Microsoft store, the staff called him in by name and led him to the back of the store where Santa was waiting for him with an Xbox One S bundled with Minecraft, as well as other Xbox items.
Both Mikah and his family were overcome with emotion during Microsoft orchestrated event.
