A fan has remade Metroid II and you can play it for free right now

If you were worried that Metroid Prime: Federation Force was the only new Metroid game you could play this month to celebrate the series' 30th anniversary, you'll be happy to hear that is no longer the case. While Federation Force may end up being a good game (despite the pre-conceived narrative), one fan has created something that most were probably hoping Nintendo would do, a remake of Metroid II: The Return of Samus titled Project AMR2.

Originally release in 1991 for the original Game Boy, Metroid II is one of (if not the most) beloved games in the series in retrospect. It introduced new methods of exploration in a non-linear fashion that went on to become staples of the series and have inspired a number of other games.

Here is the project's official description:

"Experience one of the most important chapters of the Metroid saga, with modern gameplay. Updated graphics, new and updated gameplay mechanics, and the thrill to explore the darkness of a dangerous planet. Your mission: Exterminate all the Metroid organisms in planet SR388."

You can download Project AMR2 right now completely free by heading over to the game's official blogsite.
