Tom Currie, a 24-year-old man from Auckland, New Zealand decided last week to leave his full-time job and embark on a 2-month journey across the country in order to catch every single Pocket Monster in the new mega app, Pokemon GO. With 20 planned bus trips on his itinerary, Currie has a lot on his plate going forward, and it seems that he is already off to a great start.
Currie has currently captured 90 of the 145 currently capturable Pokemon (Ditto, Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, MewTwo and Mew are currently unavailable, but are in the game's code), so he's already ahead of schedule. He's already made stops at six South Island towns and caught Pokemon at each one. So why would someone just up and leave their paying job to do something so spontaneous?
Currie told The Guardian:
"I wanted to have an adventure…I have been working for six years and I was desperate for a break. And Pokémon gave me the chance to live that dream."
Currie also says he has been doing the journey on the cheap, electing to crash on friend's couches and staying in super crowded backpacker hostels instead of putting himself up in hotels. It also helps that he has the support of his family on this journey as well, as his mother, Tania Dobbs said:
“Tom is a very spur-of-the-moment, independent kid, he always has been…His nana and I don’t understand the game but I remember him loving it in his childhood. I am just glad he is out enjoying his life and seeing so much of New Zealand. I back him 100%.”
If you're gonna do something spontaneous, it's best to do it in the way that Tom Currie is doing it, while you're young and before life sticks all of its commitments to you. Good for Tom in getting to do this while he can.
