Garrett Hedlund, the guy who played Sam Flynn in Tron: Legacy, is either a relentless optimist or simply wants to keep fans hoping for Tron 3 to be brought to life. As far as we hear, Tron 3 was almost a thing, but got squashed by Disney for some reason or another. Disney has been pretty busy planning the next five years of Star Wars, they might not even have time for Tron right now.
Speaking with ComicBook.com, Hedlund revealed the film might be alive after all. His belief is founded in the fact that no one has told him 'it's totally dead.'
"I haven’t been told it’s totally dead. Ever since we did Legacy, we knew that to have another story follow it up, it had to be concrete and exciting. Disney needed to have the right story to go forward. I think it was going to introduce some things that were as exciting as Legacy was and then some, though."
If Billy Crystal taught us one thing in Princess Bride, it's that there's a difference between mostly dead and dead. It sounds like Tron 3 might be mostly dead, but not dead-dead. Which is great for Tron fans who want to continue to believe in the film, but if you were to ask Olivia Wilde, she'd say it was dead.
Hedlund went on to say that while he didn't believe it to be totally dead, the film probably isn't around the corner:
"Who knows, maybe it’ll be like Legacy was to the first Tron, it’ll be 30 years, and I’ll have my young Flynn CGI face, who knows? But they could do it anytime from now, and I would of course jump back in. Something like that could be quite fun, though!"
