The reception of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare has been mixed, to say the least, it sold less than previous games, the trailer quickly became one of the most hated on YouTube, and opinions on the game has been split in general when it comes to Infinite Warfare.
Despite launch sales being less than half of Black Ops III in the UK and physical sales being down 50 percent from Balck Ops III in the US, despite Microsoft refunding the game on PC because no one was playing online, and despite the reveal trailer gaining 2nd placement in the top 10 most hated YouTube videos list the game has sold really well, according to Activision and the charts at least.
Infinite Warfare is the seventh title in the franchise to be a best seller at Christmas, fending off big titles such as FIFA 17 and Battlefield 1. According to Activision, Infinite Warfare is the top grossing console game of 2016, but they never released any hard numbers, just a press release after the charts had been updated stating that Infinite Warfare is "the #1 console video game in the US, based on year-to-date revenues from physical unit sales." Like the quote says, it only accounts for physical sales and for console games. Then there is the fact that Infinite Warfare cost $80 if gamers wanted the Modern Warfare remaster as well, but no hard numbers were released alongside the press release so we can't be sure exactly how they calculated all this.
