Saying that Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy did ‘OK’ in sales is an understatement. The game outsold every release in June in just two days and was the top PlayStation 4 game for July in the US and Europe. With so much success in a single remaster, it’s absolutely no surprise if Activision decides to remaster other classic franchises, in fact, it’s likely.
During a recent earnings call, Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg said (quote via GameSpot), “We knew that there was a passionate audience out there for Crash–full disclosure, myself among them–but we had no idea… it’s hard to tell if that’s a vocal minority or that’s a real mass audience until you put something out there. Crash has surpassed all of our expectations by a pretty wide margin.”
While Activision was surprised, they know what they are doing. They claim the remaster came from listening to their communities and fans and that they will be utilizing more of their game library in the future:
“I think you can be confident there will be more activity like this in the future with more great IP. The other opportunity beyond remasters is to look at some of our classic IP and ask whether or not it can be reborn on a new platform, like what we’re doing with Skylanders on mobile. Our IP library is an asset that, when done right, can be very powerful.”
Sure, this means porting – hopefully to the Nintendo Switch – but it also brings the opportunity to remaster other classics… like say…. Spyro!
