Call of Duty has strayed very far from its roots over the last few years. In 2012, we got Black Ops 2 which was the first step into futuristic warfare. It was still somewhat grounded, but it was a sign of things to come. After a few years, Call of Duty turned into a series where you could use jet packs and go to space. While it still has an audience, fans haven't been incredibly happy.
Today, Activision revealed in their earnings report that Sledgehammer's 2017 entry in the Call of Duty series will "bring the series back to its roots". It seems Activision is being very clear with this statement and aren't trying to hide anything. Although they didn't divulge specific details, the series could return to World War 2 like many people have been wanting for years.
It's possible Activision saw the success of EA's Battlefield 1 which took the series from a modern day setting all the way back to World War 1. It resonated with players due to it being original, unique, and a refreshing change of pace for first-person shooters.
Players have dropped off the Call of Duty train over the years and it's possible that Activision is hoping to bring those players back. Back in November, we wrote an editorial discussing how Call of Duty has fallen off and how it can return to its former glory.
The next Call of Duty is set to release this year, most likely in November like usual.
