In 2014, Marvel introduced the first group cosmic heroes into the MCU with Guardians of the Galaxy. In that very same film, director James Gunn teased another cosmic hero in an easter egg. In one specific scene, eagle-eyed fans can spot an opened cocoon which is a reference to Adam Warlock. Since then, fans have speculated that Warlock would turn up in a future Marvel film but it has yet to happen.
During the press tour for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2., Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed Warlock would indeed appear in a future Marvel movie. James Gunn was quick to clarify that he wouldn't show up in Avengers: Infinity War like many fans have been expecting.
“He’s not. He’s not in Infinity War. But he will be a part of the future Marvel cosmic universe and a pretty important part of that.”
Neither Feige or Gunn confirmed where he would appear but Feige gave us a bit of a tease. “If he appears anywhere in the future, it’ll be in Guardians.”
From the sounds of it, Adam Warlock will appear in Guardians of the Galaxy 3 which was recently confirmed to be directed and written by James Gunn.
Adam Warlock almost made his debut appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2., Gunn revealed that Warlock was set to be in the film in a very early version of the film. Sadly, he got cut from the movie when Gunn began writing the full script because he felt there was already a lot going on in the movie.
“I love Adam Warlock. He’s one of my favorite characters. In all truth, I wrote an early treatment where I had Adam Warlock as a part…this is your big scoop, because I don’t think I’ve told anybody this… It was Adam Warlock. He was a big part of the screenplay and I realized it was one character too many. And I adored the character. I adored what we had done with him. I think we did something really creative and unique with Adam Warlock. But it was one character too many and I didn’t want to lose Mantis and Mantis was more organically part of the movie anyway. So I decided to save him for later.”
