Afro Samurai 2, after being released earlier this year amidst bad reviews and complaints of technical issues, has been removed from store fronts with owners offering full refunds.
Steve Escalante, Versus Evil's publisher, has pulled the game off of every marketplace it is on and spoke to CGM about the game's failure by saying
“The game was a failure. We could not do, in good conscience, volume 2 and volume 3. So we’ve begun the process, it’s been a long process to figure it out because Sony has never really had to do this in this way, but we’re returning all the money. So across the board we’re putting out an apology saying ‘sorry about this.’”
I'm not sure what Versus Evil was expecting with Afro Samurai 2 to be honest. The first game was simply ok and I played this second version. It's an action fighting game full of rubber banding, glitchy jumps and technical issues that are generally not even in alpha tests of games. Of course, yeah, they did the right thing by giving the money back but let's not go overboard here. This game had plenty of development time and there was no reason for it to be released the way it was so we can't really go above and beyond with crediting someone for doing the right thing.
We've seen this before this year with Batman Arkham Knight being temporarily pulled on PC and seems to be a new "hail mary" move by developers. If the game's not finished, simply release it and try to fix it afterwards. Sometimes it works, but in cases like Afro Samurai 2 and Batman on PC, it didn't.
