Iron Tower Studios’ throw back RPG Age of Decadence isn’t forgiving in its combat. Utilizing a heavily tactical approach, the game also offers a system of multiple quest solutions, character development and interaction as well as consequences dependent on dialog choice. The game sets itself up to be challenging. Set in a fantasy world inspired by the last days of Rome, Age of Decadence is turn-based and carries with it an old school approach to RPGs.
The game itself has been in development for 10 years and was previously available on Steam Early Access gaining some pretty favorable reviews along the way. While the graphics are showing their age due to the length of dev time it is a minor concern against the massive amount of detail applied to the game as a whole. NPCs will actively lie to you, the lore work runs deep and the combat can be unforgiving.
Iron Tower describes it as “an experiment, an attempt to explore a different direction, taking you back to the PnP roots of the genre. It doesn’t mean that the game is awesome. In fact, there is a good chance that you won’t like it, precisely because we took too many liberties with the established design.”
It’s available now via Steam, though there is a demo available.
