Savor every moment of it

During X019, Microsoft finally showed the first-ever look at the Age of Empires IV. The great gameplay reveal trailer focuses on the medieval time period and showcases highly-detailed units, buildings and environments. Check it out here!

Fans of real-time strategy games were super excited when Xbox head of marketing teased the long-anticipated new entry of one of the grandfathers of the genre a couple days ago. Just as expected, Age of Empires IV indeed was featured at X019. Fans finally got to see the fourth AoE games in action and it looks simply brilliant. With the release of the Age of Empires II Definitive Edition yesterday, the advancements in 4 stand out only that much more. Gone are the small sprites in favor of high-fidelity 3D models. Together with a freely movable camera, Age of Empires has arrived in the future. On top of that, buildings now also feature local physically-based destruction. It’s just amazing.

We know that our community has been eager to learn more about Age of Empires IV since we announced it at gamescom in 2017. We’ve been hard at work on the game and we’re excited to share some of it with the world today. As part of Inside Xbox, live from X019 in London, we revealed a first look at the game with an all-new trailer. We hope we’ve given you enough to discuss and theorize! As the footage said, we’re pre-Alpha. So while we’ve come a long way, we will continue to put in our best work to ensure it lives up to the Age of Empires name.

Developer by RTS powerhouse studio Relic, AoEIV is in very good hands. Relic is most-famously known for their excellent Dawn of War and Company of Heroes RTS titles. With the cult full-3D space-RTS Homeworld duology, they themselves also are a proven quality when it comes to doing the genre justice.

Sadly, Microsoft didn’t share any details about the release date but we are hopeful that Age of Empires IV will come out in 2020. In the meantime, you should absolutely check out the newly released Age of Empires II Definitive Edition to get your AoE fix. It’s more than just a port of the original game for modern systems and features improved assets, gameplay mechanics and AI.
