20th Century Fox announced today on Twitter that Alien: Covenant, the follow up film to Prometheus, has an official release date.
Set for release on October 6th, 2017, The film is a direct sequel to Prometheus which acts as a prequel to the prequel to Alien. Originally set as the prequel to Alien, Scott indicated that it was too difficult to make the jump in one film and thus changed it, essentially making Prometheus a Before-quel. The film was set up perfectly at the end with the origin of the Alien shown and presented an easy transition into the next film which was supposed to be set as the direct prequel to Alien.
Well, things changed. As we know now this new film will be the beginning of a trilogy and mark the end of a four part prequel (these new films and Prometheus) set to shown the origination of the original Alien film franchise. Now, if you've seen Prometheus and think it sounds a little odd on how they would make three more films before tying into Alien you're not alone. We were discussing it internally and pretty much have the same feeling.
Also, this is not the Alien sequel that is also being directed by Neil Blomkamp. This will release at another, unspecified time but will have some of the original cast involved. If all this sounds confusing don't worry, we have your back. As a simple break down, Ridley Scott did the first Alien film and also Prometheus. Rather than Prometheus 2 it has been made into a trilogy with an entirely new title of Alien: Covenant. The Alien sequel has nothing to do with this trilogy and is directed by Neil Blomkamp, not Scott, who was the original director of the film.
