‘Alien: Covenant’ will introduce us to a new kind of alien

Michael Fassbender has revealed that the Xenomorphs will receive a new name in the upcoming 'Alien: Covenant'.

News about the upcoming 'Alien: Covenant' has been scattered as of late, starting with 'District 9's Neil Blompkamp placing his project on hold, allowing Ridley Scott to return to direct. 'Covenant' plans to do a better job of linking 'Prometheus' with the other 'Alien' movies considering the near century time gap between then and the events on the Nostromo. Despite the premiere almost a year away, it hasn't kept details from the project to drop, especially in regards to the newest version of the alien creatures we'll be seeing.

In a recent interview with BBC Radio 2, Michael Fassbender revealed that the next version of the classic aliens will not be called Xenomorphs just yet, but will actually be referred to as "Neomorphs". Along with the latest name drop, AVPGalaxy.com has details on the actual origin of the Neomorphs and how they tie into the rest of the universe:

We’ve also got some additional details about the Neomorphs for you! These Aliens are the result of the local ecosystem being mutated by the accelerant/black goo. Over time, pods started to grow on the trees and the ground, and release a spore when disturbed.
These spores infect several members of the Covenant crew by entering the body through the ear and nostrils. The spores cause the growth of the Neomorphs inside the infected hosts – something that is reminiscent of William Gibson’s first draft of Alien 3. One of the Neomorphs bursts from the back of one of the infected crew, a backburster. The other crewmember’s Neomorph erupts through their throat.
The movie stars Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, Katherine Waterston, Danny McBride, and Billy Crudup.
