Alien: Isolation sells over 2 million copies during ‘weak’ year for SEGA

Creative Assembly's first-person horror-survival Alien: Isolation has sold more than 2.1 million copies, SEGA announced during its latest earnings report for the year ended March 31, 2015; but, it's still not enough to keep the publisher satisfied.

Up from the 1 million sales figure announced back in January, Alien: Isolation — which was inspired by the horror roots of the first film in the iconic movie franchise — helped contribute to SEGA's 12.3 million in packaged software sales, Despite the year-over-year improvement in sales, SEGA still lamented its overall performance in the field as "weak due to the harsh market environment."

Most of SEGA's frustration is probably directed at the failure of its other franchises, though.

SEGA's Football Manager 2015 shifted 810,000 units for PC, while the Sonic Boom games for Wii U and 3DS combined to sell 620,000 copies.

Clearly, Alien: Isolation was the top-performer, but it remains to be seen if the game's relative success will warrants a sequel. From a fan perspective, I'm hopeful. While I admire Creative Assembly's willingness to return to the horror roots of the first film with Isolation, some of the overall game mechanics simply ruined the experience for me. I still enjoyed it, though, and would be willing to see what they could do with a sequel.

Overall, SEGA earned ¥111 billion ($925.7m) in revenue, up 11 percent year-on-year.
