Alpha Colony is a ‘modern tribute’ to M.U.L.E.

DreamQuest Games is re-imagining M.U.L.E., a combination of real-time and turn-based strategies that originally appeared on Atari, as two new games on Kickstarter.

Dan Bunten designed the influential game, which won him a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. Electronic Arts published the title in 1983, and it ranks fifth on PCWorld's list of top 10 PC games ever made — sitting alongside StarCraft, The Sims, Civilization, and World of Warcraft.

The Kickstarter campaign will fund two separate entries: M.U.L.E. Returns, a "faithful remake" for mobile devices with three difficulty levels, and Alpha Colony: A Tribute to M.U.L.E., a "modern" update for PC, Mac, and iOS.

Different pledge levels will grant fans early access to alpha and beta versions of both games (starting at $60), as well as "limited rewards" (at $500+) that put players in collaboration with the writers and artists.

Based in Colorado, DreamQuest takes "classic games from the past — be they card games like Hearts or Spades, or board games like Chess or Checkers — and amplify them using 21st century technology." They've worked to produce titles for PC, iPhone, iPad, and Android.
