Frictional Games has formally announced the third entry into their horror-adventure Amnesia franchise. Titled Amnesia: Rebirth, this time fans of horror games can look forward to keeping their calm in the face of unfathomable horror in a brand-new desert setting. Check out the announcement trailer below!
Horror games are as old as the gaming medium. The thrill of not only accomplishing but doing that under the immense pressure of all kinds of horrific threats has long proven a killer combo in the gaming medium. But where many titles implement action-oriented mechanics alongside, true horror games excel at taking power away from gamers, making them even more vulnerable, and thus raising stakes even further.
Set in the desolate landscape of the Algerian desert, the game will focus on new character Tasi Trianon as she sets out on a harrowing journey through devastation and despair, personal terror and pain, while exploring the limits of human resilience.
You can’t let out a breath. The creature is only inches away. Its sole purpose – to feed off your terror. And so you crouch in the dark, trying to stop the fear rising, trying to silence what lies within you.
Retracing Tasi’s journey and pulling together the fragments of a shattered past will be the only chance to survive the pitiless horror that threatens to devour you. Time is against you. Still, you must continue, step by step, knowing that if you fail you will lose everything.
Probably no other game than 2010’s Amnesia: The Dark Descent perfected this to a tee. While Resident Evil and the likes managed to scare gamers for a long time before it, Frictional Games changed the rules with an overbearingly thick atmosphere where even peeking around the corner was a tense experience. You very likely have seen one of the gazillion Let’s Play videos and enjoyed second-hand scares yourself.
Despite The Dark Descent’s huge success, it took an entire decade for Frictional Games to create a proper sequel with Amnesia: Rebirth. 2013’s Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs was developed by an entirely different developer after all and wasn’t that well-received. So, it’s great to see the masters of the craft return.
Amnesia: Rebirth is set to come out on PC just around the spooky season sometime in Fall.
