R2-D2 was up for sale after all. As reported by Entertainment Weekly, an R2-D2 unit, assembled from parts that were used in the original trilogy, as well as The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones has been sold at auction for just under $3 million. Profiles in History, a California-based auction house that specializes in authentic Hollywood memorabilia reported the sale to EW from an unidentified buyer.
The R2 unit measured 43 x 29.5 x 20 inches and was estimated to be worth between $1 million and $2 million. The droid was sold alongside two other Star Wars pieces; a Luke Skywalker helmet ($450,000) and a Darth Vader helmet ($96,000), neither of which came close to selling for what the R2 Unit went for.
In other Star Wars news, Jabba The Hutt will be making an appearance in the upcoming Han Solo film, whose behind the scenes drama following the departure of the movie's directors has gotten strange.
