As time goes along, the wait for what comes next just gets shorter and shorter. It seems like just yesterday that Sony released their PS4 Pro console, serving as a mid-generation upgrade on an already stellar console. One analyst is predicting that it won't stay as Sony's top console very long. According to the Wall Street Journal, Macquarie Capital Securities analyst Damian Thong predicts that Sony will release "its next-generation PlayStation by the second half of 2018."
This may sound a little extreme, but it's worth noting that Thong is the same "analyst who correctly predicted PS4 Pro and Slim," according to the WSJ article's author. Considering the amount of competition between Sony and Microsoft in the console space, and the fact that Project Scorpio is due to be more powerful than the PS4 Pro, Sony may be forced to one-up their rivals sooner rather than later.
In this day and age of social media and direct connectivity, fan voices (complaints) are louder than ever and sitting on the market with an inferior machine as your top-shelf console is not a wise business strategy. If this does turn out to be true, don't expect to hear about it for some time.
