Looks like we can just keep swimming. There will be a sequel to Finding Nemo, and writer/director Andrew Stanton will be returning to Pixar to direct it. Apparently, he came onboard with a concept for Finding Nemo 2 that the studio loves.
Stanton has been attached to the best films in Pixar's history. He co-wrote Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Toy Story 3 and Monsters Inc. in addition to writing and directing both Finding Nemo and Wall-E. This was all before his last project: the live-action sci-fi epic John Carter — which I loved but no one else saw. John Carter was a financial failure — mostly due to really bad marketing that caused no one to go see it — but the movie was passionate, charming, and really well done.
Finding Nemo 2 is rumored to have a 2016 release date, which is understandable considering that Pixar movies take a while to make. Pixar also has other films due out between now and 2016, including: Monsters University (6/21/13), The Good Dinosaur (5/30/2014), an untitled Pixar movie that takes you inside the mind of a girl that has her emotions as characters (6/19/2015), and a movie about Dia de los Muertos (2015). Toy Story 4 is also rumored to be in the works.
It is also being reported that if Stanton directed Finding Nemo 2 that Disney would give him another chance at directing a live-action film.
If this Finding Nemo 2 news made you ink, you can look forward to seeing Finding Nemo coming back to the big screen in 3D September 14, 2012.
