Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie set for possible 2013 release

James Rolfe, more popularly known as the Angry Video Game Nerd — possibly the angriest, most foul-mouthed retro game and movie critic — has wanted to make a self-titled movie since 2010.

Last week, Rolfe finally revealed a trailer for the movie. That's right, it's happening, and it looks just as cheesy — and nerdy — as you might expect.

Rolfe worked with fellow independent filmmaker Kevin Finn on Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie, which is entirely funded by fan donations. Principle photography took place early this year in Los Angeles, with additional filming set on the East Coast.

The story is based on Atari's commercial failure E.T., adapted from the popular movie. Atari rushed it out in time for the Christmas shopping season, but millions of unsold cartridges ended up buried in a desert landfill in Alamogordo, New Mexico — not too far from the famous Roswell landing site.

The trailer below features music by Bear McCreary (Battlestar Gallactica, The Walking Dead). You can download the track, “Maverick Regeneration," as part of the Play for Japan album, which benefits earthquake victims in Japan.

Rolfe expects the film to release in summer 2013, "but only time will tell." DVD, Blu-ray, and digital download formats are all possibilities.
