Animated Batman: The Killing Joke film will have one night theatrical release

The classic Batman story, The Killing Joke, will finally be getting an animated film adaptation this summer. To make it even sweeter, the film will be true to the brutality shown in the comic and will be rated R. As we gear up for its digital release and San Diego Comic-Con world premiere, Warner Bros. and Fathom Events has revealed that the film will be getting a theatrical release for one night only just before San Diego Comic-Con.

“Fathom Events is thrilled to be able to bring ‘Batman: The Killing Joke’ to movie theaters across the country so fans can see it on the big screen,” Fathom Events Vice President of Studio Relations Tom Lucas said in a press release. “Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment have created an amazing production based on a beloved graphic novel, and we’re honored to be a part of this release.”

The film will release in theaters across the United States on Monday, July 25th for two showings at 7:30 and 10:00 PM. Since the film is rated R, you won't be able to get in without a parent if you're under 17. To make the night even more special, the film will have special clips before and after the film that won't be released anywhere else.

If you want to spend your night with other hardcore Batman fans, you can buy your tickets here starting June 17th. Since this is such a special event, I wouldn't expect this film to be released in tons of theaters but you can find out if a showing is near you when tickets go live on the 17th.

The film will bring fan favorites Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy back to reprise their roles as The Joker and Batman respectively and will also star Tara Strong as Batgirl/Barbra Gordon.
