The potential for another installment in the Men in Black series has been in talks since 2012, about the same time they started hinting at another Jumanji movie (which has already happened). In 2015, Sony changed their Men in Black talks from a fourth film in the series to a revival of the trilogy or even a crossover with Jump Street franchise.
It looks like Sony has decided to resurrect the franchise with a spin-off and neither Will Smith or Tommy Lee Jones are expected to come back. The film won't be the Jump Street x MiB mashup, but that is still in talks for a later date.
The Men in Black spin-off script is being written by Iron Man and Transformers: The Last Knight's Matt Holloway and Art Marcum, and is set in the same world as the previous films, just more contemporary.
"It’s so rare to get to the end of the script and know you’re holding a movie in your hands, but Art and Matt have written a spinoff that somehow is true to the core of the MiB world and yet expands the franchise to a fresh new place," producer Walter F. Parkes stated.
The Men in Black spin-off is set to release on May 17th, 2019.
