Arnold Schwarzenegger confirms new Terminator movie is moving forward; James Cameron involved

The last two Terminator films (Salvation and Genisys) were widely hated by fans and critics so it's lead some to question the future of the franchise. Will it go on hiatus, will they straight up reboot it? Action star and former governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger confirmed the franchise will return and he will star in the next incarnation.

"It is back," he said. "It is moving forward. [Cameron] has some good ideas of how to continue with the franchise. I will be in the movie."

James Cameron originally created the franchise and directed two of the films but then moved on to other projects. He's had some involvement here and there but it's been mostly in the hands of other creators. From the sounds of it, Cameron will be involved more heavily with the next Terminator film.

The rights for Terminator will go back to James Cameron in 2019 but it's unlikely he'll begin the movie until mid-2020s at the very least. Cameron is strung up with all 4 Avatar sequels for the next decade which are filming back to back to back to back. The fifth and final Avatar movie is set to release in 2025 but who knows if it'll even hit that date.

So for now, it sounds like Terminator may be put on hold for some time while Cameron finishes up his other projects. It's entirely possible he'll let someone take over again and he'll remain on as a producer or creative consultant but it's too soon to tell.
