Assassin’s Creed Unity patch unlocks chests locked by Companion app and Initiates website

Ubisoft is finally removing one of the dumbest restrictions from Assassin's Creed Unity. Previously, certain content and rewards were locked behind the Assassin's Creed Unity Companion app for Android and iOS and the Assassin's Creed Initiates website. Unity players would have to refer to the app and website in order to gain access to special chests in the game, but this will no longer be the case.

What was in the locked chests? In-game currency and new clothes for Arno — a change of outfit is important and so is money…Important enough for Ubisoft to block players from getting them.

Patch 5 will lift the barrier between players and the chests. During a live update, the developers revealed their plans:

"We will be unlocking all content exclusive to Initiates and the Companion App, including both blue and gold chests. Players can still progress on the Companion App, they just will no longer be required to complete content to unlock in-game chests."

Now, I'm not saying that this patch will stop everyone from using the Companion App and Initiates website, but it will definitely trim down the number of people using them. Forcing players to go to an outside source to unlock something in their game is ridiculous. The whole concept was ridiculous, I wouldn't even use the Companion App or site if I played Unity — call it laziness or just plain stubbornness.

The patch isn't solely releasing with the intention of unlocking content, it's also bringing a slew of fixes along with it:

Stability & performance

  • Fixed numerous random crashes both on Campaign and Coop

Save game & Progression

  • Fixed gear and outfit rewards getting relocked
  • Added users profile corrector to resolve companion synchronization issues
  • Made Initiate and companion app exclusive content accessible to all players
  • Fixed the ‘Find Leon’ objective not spawning on Dead Kings Memory 2

Online matchmaking, connectivity & replication

  • Fixed various matchmaking and connection issues both in matches and when starting a match.
  • Fixed various replication issues between host and clients
  • Fixed issues with the My Club feature

Gameplay (navigation, fight, stealth)

  • Fixed issue with Arno losing control after trying to launch Initiates from the pause menu
  • Fixed minor navigation issues

Menus and HUD

  • Fixed issues occurring when hacking gears
  • Fixed additional issues with notifications

World & 3D

  • Fixed some minor FX and texture issues

This patch is rolling out to both Xbox One and PS4 players today (February 18th). PC Players can expect the patch on February 19th.
