Assassin’s Creed will not return with a new entry in 2019

Assassin’s Creed is one of the biggest franchises in gaming and part of that has been its yearly release cycle. However, Ubisoft and fans have begun to realize the quality of the franchise has shifted due to the release cycle.

Back in 2015, Ubisoft released the fairly well-received Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate but sales weren’t great following the horribly broken AC: Unity from 2014 so they took a year off in 2016. The return to the series in 2017 with Origins was critically acclaimed and was the soft-reboot the series needed, eliminating series fatigue and allowing Ubisoft to overhaul the gameplay.

While we’re getting a game that uses Origins as a foundation with Odyssey this October, Ubisoft will be taking another year off next year. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillmot made the announcement that Assassin’s Creed will be resting until 2020 to GameSpot during Gamescom.

“We had a game [in 2018] and we have one this year, but we are not going to have a full-fledged Assassin’s next year,” Guillemot said. “It’s just because the team was working separately, so we have two games now, one year after the other. But next year you’re not going to have a fully-fledged one.”

Fear not, though! Guillemot promised that Assassin’s Creed Odyssey will be supported with plenty of content throughout 2019 and perhaps even 2020.

“What you’ll have is lots of content coming on [Odyssey]. The team really want to give, on a regular basis, some new possibilities for play, so when you get [Odyssey] this year, you’re going to get in for a couple of years, actually.”

There’s no indication as to where the next Assassin’s Creed will be set but people are once again speculating that it’ll be in Feudal Japan based on a small clue left in Assassin’s Creed III. Only time will tell if Ubisoft will take the time off to port/remaster some of the older Assassin’s Creed games for Nintendo Switch like they did with the Ezio collection on Xbox One and PS4 in 2016.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey will release on Xbox One, PS4, and PC on October 5th, 2018.
