The elusive Spelunky 2 finally has a release date. Come September 15, PlayStation 4 owners will be able to die, die, and die again in this long-awaited sequel to one of the best roguelikes ever created. PC players will get their version after a short while. Check out the new trailer below!
Announced during the recent State of Play event, Spelunky 2 is going to be exclusively available on the PS4. But rest assured, this isn’t one of the many timed-exclusive deals we have seen so much lately. Instead, the developer of the game simply needs the extra time to work out the kinks of the online portion of the PC version. Still, there is no concrete info about how long this little while is going to be.
Our hope is that all this new content is going to be fun for new players as well as existing Spelunky fans. Not only is there more to see and do, but there will be more opportunities to find a playstyle that suits you best. And as you to explore the game world and unravel its secrets, you’ll be building a community of characters, old and new, who will support you on your journey and make your adventure feel richer and more interconnected. Justin Chan has done a wonderful job illustrating these characters and helping to bring them to life based on my little sprites.
Nonetheless, PlayStation 4 owners can look forward to September 15 when Spelunky 2 launches. And there’s good reason to be excited. The original Spelunky is not only one of the most important indie games which can be co-attributed for kickstarting the indie renaissance, but it’s regularly cited as one of the best games of all time. Period.
Derek Yu and his team at Mossmouth have greatly expanded the already outstanding formula of the first game with tons of new gameplay mechanics and – finally – online support.
