Atlus and Vanillaware are teaming up for Odin Sphere HD

Following an initial teaser for a new “HD project,” Atlus and Vanillaware today announced Odin Sphere: Leifdrasir, a modern remaster of the PS2 cult classic. The game is due out on PS3, PS4 and PS Vita in Japan on January 14, 2016.

Given Atlus’ strong localization support and the Western success of Vanillaware’s other hits, namely Muramasa and Dragon’s Crown, a Western release of Leifdrasir is sure to follow. This is to say nothing of the fact that the original version came to North America just five days after the game’s Japanese launch.

As Siliconera reports, the team calls Leifdrasir an “HD remake that goes beyond your average remasters,” and not without reason. The new incarnation will introduce more maps, attacks, enemies, animations and other features in addition to the trappings and finery of added polygons and a smoother frame rate.

Originally released in May 2007 and eventually moved to PlayStation Network in 2011, Odin Sphere is a 2D action-RPG spiritually akin to Vanillaware’s latest release, Dragon’s Crown. Although it retains the studio’s iconic art style and fluid 2D combat, Odin Sphere has more RPG elements than Vanillaware’s other releases.
