While we have been patiently awaiting the arrival Attack on Titan's second season (which will release sometime in 2016), Japanese anime studio Production I.G has been hard at work on the spinoff no one asked for… Attack on Titan: Junior High. The show is an adaptation of a parody manga that was based on the original Attack on Titan manga written by Hajime Isayama.
Attack on Titan: Junior High follow familiar protagonists, Eren Yeager and Mikasa Ackerman in a very unfamiliar environment – middle school. The story is set in Titan Jr. High, a school where humans and Titans study together. One day a Colossal Titan ate Eren's favorite lunch – since then he has been trying to rid the Earth of their kind.
You might be wondering why we are getting this spinoff before we have even gotten a glimpse of Attack on Titan's second season. It turns out that the first season of Attack on Titan — made up of 24 episodes — was adapted from eight volumes of the manga series and the latest issue released in Japan was the 16th volume. The studio producing the anime is giving Isayama time to write more content so that the series can be more evenly paced.
Just because we didn't ask for it doesn't mean it will be a disaster. It's a lighthearted way of seeing us into Season Two of the more serious show. Attack on Titan: Junior High will air in Japan this October.
